This mask was lot 61 in the Katchen collection. Sothebys description below.Jo (old men) masks figure prominently in Noh. They represent one of the six main types of masks used by performers to convey mood and character. The distinctive characteristic of Jo masks as a group is the joining of opposing locks of hair brought up from the sides and fastened together at the centre of the head.The Akobujo mask featured here, carved with only the upper teeth exposed and with jutting cheekbones is intended to portray despair and loss and is used by the protaganist Ohaku, saddened and distraught at the premature death of his son in the Noh play Tenkowritten by Zeami
